Adoption Policies & Procedures

Adoption Policies & Procedures

**COVID19 Adoption
Procedure Protocol**

  1. Tender Loving Cats is a foster based rescue, we require that you apply and be an approved applicant before meeting the cat/kitten(s) in foster homes. We also have some of our cat/kitten(s) currently up for adoption that you can meet at our PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers located at 1208 Deer Park Ave, N. Babylon, NY & 535 Montauk Hwy, W. Babylon, NY. We have volunteers there Mon-Sat 9-11am & 6-8pm Sunday 9-11am & 4-6pm. The location of each cat/kitten is written in their description on PetFinder. At this time, potential adopters can meet our adoptable cat/kitten(s) at our PetSmart Adoption Center locations by appointment ONLY. To make an appointment a potential adopter should email meetthekitties@tenderlovingcats.org or leave us a message on the volunteer hotline at 1-866-458-8228(ILUVCATS) Ext 1.
  2. All volunteers and potential adopters must maintain 6-feet of space between you and others while in or when entering the PetSmart premises and when entering the Adoption Center. All volunteers and potential adopters must comply with wearing a cloth face covering while on the PetSmart premises, when entering and/or while inside the Adoption Center. Volunteers have the right to remind staff, volunteers, and potential adopters of the requirement for 6-feet spacing as needed.
  3. Complete our adoption application. Ensure that you see a green check mark that says “successfully submitted” and receive a copy of your application to your email. If not, your application may not have been received.
  4. After the adoption application is submitted you will hear from our adoption committee for an interview. We like to process applications within 24hrs from the interview as long as all references can be reached but please know that timeline is not always the case.
  5. Once your application has been approved, you can meet the cat/kitten(s) in their foster homes via a FaceTime/Zoom meeting or if possible we may be able to arrange a meeting at our PetSmart N. Babylon location. Any cat/kitten(s) that are located at our PetSmart North or West Babylon locations can on be visited by appointment ONLY (see 1).
  6. In Lieu of a home delivery, the adopter will conduct a walkthrough of their home and setup for the new cat/kitten(s) via a FaceTime or Zoom meeting.
  7. Adoption Agreements with medical history are emailed and signed electronically and adopters are provided a link to pay the adoption fee via PayPal. A check or cash can be given at the time of delivery or pick up.
  8. Once a walkthrough and Adoption Agreement has been completed you will be able to pickup your newly adopted cat/kitten(s) at an agreed upon location. The adopter must bring a hard case carrier to safely transport your new cat/kitten(s) home. If it has been agreed upon that a volunteer will deliver the adopted cat/kitten(s), please note that it is the policy of TLC that all volunteers interacting with the public wear a mask and maintain a 6-foot distance. Carrier handles will be disinfected prior to exchanging hands. We do not deliver outside of the five boroughs and Long Island at this time. We do not deliver out-of-state.
  9. If delivered, once your new cat/kitten(s) is inside and let out in the agreed upon room, then disinfect the handle and bring the carrier back out to the volunteer who delivered. If you are picking up your new cat/kitten(s) disinfect the carrier handle before giving to the volunteer to safely place him/her inside. A volunteer has also been instructed to do the same when handing you the carrier with your new cat/kitten(s) inside.
  10. Once your new cat/kitten(s) are settled in please send us a picture!

We hope you and your family stay safe during these unprecedented times. Thank you for adopting! ❤️

5. Complete our adoption application. Ensure that you see a green check mark that says “successfully submitted” and receive a copy of your application to your email. If not, your application may not have been received.

6. After the adoption application is submitted you should hear from our adoption committee within 24hrs for an interview. We like to process applications within 24hrs from the interview as long as all references can be reached

7. A home delivery of the cat/kitten or a FaceTime walkthrough of your home is required. Long distance deliveries will be considered on a case by case basis.

8. When choosing the purrfect cat/kitten for your household remember to choose a personality that fits your household over looks. Ask yourself the following questions - Do you have a quiet or busy household? Is it important that a cat or kitten be raised with other cats, dogs or young children?
See "Before Adopting a New Cat/Kitten(s)".

9. Please note that single kitten adoptions will not be allowed to go home until 12wks of age and already spayed/neutered & microchipped. If you're a local approved applicant and interested in adopting a pair of kittens, they may be able to go home to you to "foster with intent to adopt". You will be required to sign a foster agreement and bring to out veterinarian for their spay/neuter, booster vaccines & microchip. All applicants approved for Kittens under the age of 12 weeks will sign a pre-adoption agreement and pay a 50% deposit. See #5 on “Before Adopting a New Cat/Kitten(s)”.

10. We do not allow potential adopters to bring current cats or dogs to meet the cats or kittens for adoption face to face. Newly adopted cat/kitten(s) require a slow introduction over a minimum of 2 weeks.

Tender Loving Cats, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization staffed entirely by volunteers who are committed to serving the best interest of the animals in its care. Adoption Procedures

Tender Loving Cats, Inc. takes pride in the standard of veterinary care, socialization and adoptive homes we provide to each and every cat/kitten we rescue. We believe this is not something that should be considered above and beyond but rather it should be the standard to which all reputable rescues are held accoutable. Our goal for each and every cat/kitten is to live a long, happy and healthy life in their forever home and to attempt to put an to the suffering of homeless cats & kittens on the street of Long Island. Outlined are the steps we take to ensure that dream one day becomes a reality -

1. Tender Loving Cats, Inc. does not take kittens from the street without ensuring we have made every effort to spay the Mother Cat, including covering the cost of spaying that Mother Cat.

2. All cats and kittens accepted into the Tender Loving Cats, Inc. Adoption Program are provided the highest quality of care by local veterinarians. This care does cost our rescue more money they we collect in a adoption fee but we feel strongly that each cat and kitten receive this level of medical care to be healthy and happy. We do not adopt out prior to spay/neuter as we feel this is essential to putting an end to the suffering of homeless cats & kittens on LI. Our cats & kittens are microchipped, tested for both feline immunodeficiency virus and leukemia (FIV/FeLV), we fully deworm our cats & kittens and we include, in the adoption fee, all first year vaccines up to and including rabies at 4mths of age at our participating veterinarians on Long Island.

3. We do not adopt kittens under 12 weeks of age into a household without another suitable feline companion as they run the risk of being returned and un-adoptable due to “Single Kitten Syndrome” or “Tarzan Syndrome”. Kittens under the age of 12 weeks can be pre-adopted with a 50% deposit and will go home once they are 12 weeks of age and spayed/neutered and microchipped. See "Before Adopting a New Cat/Kitten(s)".

4. We have an adoption process which includes an interview, we check personal and veterinary reference references and perform a home delivery or home check prior to adoption to ensure both parties are comfortable and the adoption is set up for success.

5. Once a TLC cat/kitten, always a TLC cat/kitten. TLC sticks by our cats 100% which means in 1yr, 5 yrs or 10 yrs if god forbid someone can no longer keep their adopted cat/kitten from TLC we always take them back.

**We always suggest doing your own research on any rescues you plan to adopt from and know their procedures, as well as consulting with a veterinarian.**
