What a year it has been! When Tender Loving Cats, Inc. was started in January of 2017, our mission was simple, yet incredibly complex, to “rescue the mistreated, save the injured and love the abandoned.” While it is difficult to put a number as to how many feral cats reside on Long Island, it is fair to say that sheer volume of feral cats on Long Island is overwhelming and we are in a state of crisis. While there are more & more rescue groups, including ours, that work to educate the public on trap, neuter and release/return of feral cats as a humane solution to the feral cat overpopulation, as well as find homes for those that can be adopted out after spay/neuter, it is incredibly difficult to keep up with the calls that come in daily from those needing help placing kittens found in backyards to the daily calls from owners who need/want to rehome their pets. When the local Animal Shelters and Rescues are full, many domesticated cats on Long Island, are often abandoned by their owners to live on the streets and not spayed/neutered. Tender Loving Cats, Inc. came from that need and with this goal in mind.
Despite these challenges, with the help of volunteers, fosters, our veterinarians and supporters, we have been able to make an impactful change on this issue. Although we have only been officially up and running for 18 months, we have been able to rescue close to 450 cats and kittens from the streets of Long Island in that time and of that number, we have adopted out 400 into loving forever homes. In 2018 we adopted out 300 of those cats & kittens alone. We’ve spayed/neutered close to 150 feral cats for Trap-Neuter-Return and we do not take kittens from an area unless all the adults are spayed/neutered. In addition, we’ve taken on many cats & kittens that have needed medical care above and beyond the norm, including eye removal surguries, entropion eyelid surgeries, orthopedic hip surgery and many dental procedures to ensure that cats and kittens that were facing neglect as a result of living on the streets were made whole once more.
While we have accomplished so much already, there is still so much left to do! In 2019, we are hoping to grow on what we have already achieved and adopt out 400 cats and kittens that were formally residing on the streets of Long Island. We are also aiming to start a low-cost spay/neuter program for feral cats and owned cats of low –income individuals, which we are calling the “P.A.L – Prevent a Litter” program.
2018 was a year of significant achievement, including the opening of our beautiful PetSmart Adoption Center location at 1208 Deer Park Ave, N. Babylon, NY and I cannot wait to see what 2019 brings. While our goals are lofty, I am confident that with continued support, we can achieve even greater things. From all of us here at Tender Loving Cats, thank you. Thank you for being a critical member of our team and allowing us to persistently work towards our mission – to “rescue the mistreated, save the injured and love the abandoned.”
Peace, Love & Cats,
Rebecca Caro Founder & President Tender Loving Cats, Inc.

Tender Loving Cats, Inc. is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c)(3), no-kill feline rescue, concentrating on reducing Long Island's community cat population through Trap-Neuter-Return and the rehabilitation of homeless cats and kittens for adoption. Pet Peeves Grants Tender Loving Cats, Inc. $3,000 to help Senior Pet Owners in Need.
Tender Loving Cats, Inc.(TLC) “Senior Owner's Assistance Program” provides food, litter and veterinary care to senior owners of felines who are (65+) on disability or on public assistance, that are financially unable to care for their beloved feline friends. The maximum payout from TLC is $3,000/year per household. Veterinary care, if needed, will be provided at discounted rates by one of TLC's participating animal hospitals.
On June 25, 2018 at 1:30 in the morning our President & Founder received a frantic phone call from an elderly, permanently disabled, bed ridden and paralyzed women with eight cats that she has cared for up to 12 years. This woman was seeking help for her cats as she could no longer afford to properly care for them. After going to her home and assessing the situation we concluded that if we could help her by covering the cost of the cats food, litter and Veterinary care then these cats could remain in the home with their owner. A TLC Volunteer liaison oversees the ordering of food, litter and arranging veterinary care. This program has the potential to help more than just this one person with 8 cats stay in their home as long as possible.
The Senior Owners Assistance Program commenced in July 2018. As of April 30, 2019, we have spent $1,547 for cat food and litter to help an impoverished, bedridden elderly woman in Melville, NY care for her feline companions.

Petfinder Foundation awards Tender Loving Cats, Inc. received a $1,000 cat enrichment grant.
Thanks to a $1,000 enrichment grant that Tender Loving Cats, Inc. was awarded by the Petfinder Foundation, we were able to purchase many different cat enrichment toy favorites: like Go Cat Wand Teasers, Tunnels, easily disinfected wooden scratching post by FrontPet & Catit Vespar with replacement pads and Stretch & Scratch disposable scratchers for all our caged kitties. These items have helped to stimulate their minds and teach them where it’s appropriate scratch in a home, making them more adoptable and more prepared to enter their forever homes. In a shelter-like environment it’s important to have items that can be easily washed and disinfected in communal play areas. This grant has enabled our grass roots shelter to provide such items to our cats & kittens that we otherwise would not have been able to.
“Kitten Yoga” event at Bearfoot Yoga & Wellness in Bayshore, NY raises $1,200 for homeless cat/kitten(s)!
It was another successful and SOLD OUT “Kitten Yoga” event & fundraiser on Saturday 9/15 at Bearfoot Yoga & Wellness. Tender Loving Cats, Inc. raised close to $1200 to support our rescue mission and the best part is that 5 homeless kittens found their forever home as a result! We would like to thank, Gina - the owner of Bearfoot Yoga and Kate - our fantastic Yoga instructor, for allowing us to do this event at Barefoot!! The studio is so beautiful and genuine. You can not help but fell Zen. We’d also like to thank the 40 “Kitten Yoga” attendees and our TLC volunteers & foster parents for making this event possible. We are certainly blessed to know you all.
